Big Red Book
Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Matthew PINSENT MBE (1970-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Matthew Pinsent, rower, was surprised by Michael Aspel during a celebration of the British Olympic Association at the London Aquarium.
Matthew, who started rowing while studying at Eton College, received his first significant honour in 1988 when he won gold at the junior world championships. While reading Geography at Oxford University, he competed in three Boat Races, winning in 1990 and 1991.
While still at Oxford, he formed a long-lasting partnership with rower Steve Redgrave, and together they won the first of their 7 gold medals at the World Rowing Championships in 1991, going on to win gold medals at the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996. In 2000 he won a third Olympic gold medal as part of a coxless four with Steve Redgrave, James Cracknell and Tim Foster.

The format is as strong as ever with Michael Aspel once again flourishing his famous big red book under the noses of unsuspecting guests from the worlds of sport and show business, as well as heroes and heroines drawn from the public. The programme celebrated its 1000th show during the last series and is actually much older than most people realise, starting life on American radio in the late 1940s. Though most guests enjoy being reunited with long-lost friends and relatives, there are always a few who are outraged by the sudden appearance of the red book. Years ago, footballer Danny Blanchflower was among those who walked off in disgust at what he saw as an invasion of his privacy.
